The kitchen and scoring

Avoid kitchen faults and learn the common 11-point format.

The non-volley zone, often called the kitchen, extends seven feet from each side of the net. You may play a ball that has bounced while standing there, but you may not volley from the zone or its line. Momentum carrying you into the zone after a volley can also be a fault.

With traditional side-out scoring, only the serving team scores; games commonly go to 11, win by two. Rally scoring is another format, so agree on the scoring method before playing.
